Hammersmith Apollo, one of the UK's most celebrated music venues, will open again in full Art Deco glory after a multi-million pound refurbishment.

When American pop starlet Selena Gomez performs on September 7, she will be playing in a venue restored to its 1932 grandeur, when it opened as the Gaumont Palace cinema. It was designed in the Art Deco style by renowned theatre architect Robert Cromie and the present building still has its original Compton pipe organ, which will stay in its original location, with decking and suspension cables removed from in front of the chambers to restore the organ's sound delivery.

Hammersmith Apollo, which is now co-owned by US live-music promotion giant AEG Live and German ticketing vendor CTS Eventim, and which became a protected Grade II listed building in 1990, has hosted some memorable concerts, including 38 gigs by The Beatles between 1964 and 1965; jazz concerts by Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong; David Bowie’s final concert as Ziggy Stardust in 1973; shows by Bob Marley and The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen’s epic 1975 performance. It later became a home to comedy shows and was for a time sponsored by Carling.

The revamp, which has been overseen by Foster Wilson Architects, includes the restoration of two marble staircases that were hidden beneath the extended stage. The venue will have a capacity of between 3,500 (mixed seated and standing) and 5,000 (all standing). The original foyer floor mosaic panels have been restored and there will be new multi-coloured LED lighting. Provision for people with disabilities has also been a focus, with a new seating layout which will double wheelchair access. The venue will announce a new headline sponsor on September 6.
