BEIJING COMMUNE Beijing Focus: Contemporary Artists: Hu Xiaoyuan, Liang Yuanwei, Ma Qiusha, Wang Guangle, Zhao Yao
Founded in 2004 by Leng Lin, now president of Pace Beijing, Beijing Commune is one of the most active galleries in the Chinese capital focusing on Chinese contemporary art. The space, a redbrick one-story building located in the 798 Art District, regularly mounts exhibitions by both established and emerging Chinese contemporary artists. The gallery has helped foster the careers of major players in the Chinese art world, such as Song Dong—who filled MoMA’s atrium with the contents of his mother’s house in 2009—and multimedia artist Yin Xiuzhen. When Yin and others left for bigger names like Pace, Beijing Commune shifted its focus to once again support emerging talents.
BOERS-LI GALLERY Beijing Focus: Contemporary Artists: Chen Shaoxiong, Chen Yujun, Hou Yong, Xie Zhengli, Yang Xinguang, Zhang Peili
Although the gallery began as a nonprofit in 2005, partners Waling Boers and Pi Li soon realized that operating a nonprofit space in China was nearly impossible. Moving forward as a commercial enterprise, Boers took over all aspects of operational management. The gallery has put an emphasis on supporting upcoming and experimental artists. In 2012 it hosted the group exhibition “Ministry of Truth”—a collection of works by nine well-known artists from the United States, China, and Germany—as well as Kang Wanhua’s “Made in Prison” series, a collection of drawings done by the artist during his imprisonment from 1976 to 1978.
GALLERIA CONTINUA Beijing, China; San Gimignano, Italy; Le Moulin, France Focus: Contemporary Artists: Ai Weiwei, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Subodh Gupta, Giovanni Ozzola, Serse
Friends Mario Cristiani, Lorenzo Fiaschi, and Maurizio Rigillo founded Galleria Continua in 1990 in an old movie theater in the medieval town of San Gimignano, Italy. Fifteen years later, they made a major shift in scope when they opened a second space in Beijing’s 798 Art District with an inaugural show of 16 artists from five continents, and in 2007, they opened a third location in Le Moulin, in the French countryside. Today, the gallery continues to present a wide range of international practitioners in its Beijing space, including Berlinde De Bruyckere, Moataz Nasr, and Kendell Geers.
JAMES COHAN GALLERY Shanghai, China; New York, U.S. Focus: Contemporary Artists: Ingrid Calame, Folkert De Jong, Shi Zhiying, Bill Viola, Wang Xieda
Founded on New York’s West 57th Street in September 1999, James Cohan Gallery showed work by British duo Gilbert & George at its inaugural exhibition. The gallery moved to West 26th Street in 2002, and in 2008 expanded to Shanghai, where it occupies a 1930s villa in the city’s former French Concession. Cohan’s programming strives to create a dialogue between China and the U.S., with, for instance, a March 2012 exhibition of videos by Bill Viola, followed by a show of Shi Zhiying’s contemporary inks.
LONG MARCH SPACE Beijing Focus: Contemporary Artists: Chen Chieh-jen, Guo Fengyi, Hu Xiangqian, Huang Ran
International curator Lu Jie opened Long March Space in 2002, and since then it has become a leading voice in Beijing’s 798 Art District. With a focus on cultivating Chinese contemporary talent, the gallery not only mounts exhibitions but also hosts a residency program that allows curators, scholars, and artists to live and work in China for up to six months. Among the space’s 2012 shows were Zhang Hui’s “Groundless,” Huang Ran’s “Disruptive Desires, Tranquility, and the Loss of Lucidity,” and Zhan Wang’s “Form of the Formless.”
SHANGHAI GALLERY OF ART Shanghai Focus: Asian contemporary Artists: Feng Mengbo, Heidi Voet, Xu Bing, Zhuang Hui and Dan’er
Shanghai Gallery of Art, situated in the city’s landmark building Three on the Bund, gained significant momentum under the directorship of Mathieu Borysevicz, with strong shows that included Feng Mengbo’s 3-D lenticular prints taken in the dilapidated Shanghai Natural History Museum and works by Xu Bing related to his novel Book From the Ground—a story told entirely in pictograms. After Borysevicz’s departure last year, the gallery took a six-month respite, reopening in April under the direction of Singaporean artist, critic, and curator Josef Ng, whose first show, “Some Like It Hot,” was an assortment of work including striking concrete torsos by Yu Ji.
RED GATE Beijing Focus: Contemporary Artists: Chen Qingqing, Chen Yufei, Han Qing, Jiang Weitao, Island 6
Perched high in the Dongbianmen Watchtower, one of the last relics of the Ming Dynasty’s Imperial City, Red Gate has planted itself firmly in China’s physical past while representing some of the country’s most progressive conceptual artists. When the space opened in 1991, it was among China’s first private contemporary galleries. Australian director and founder Brian Wallace has also organized an international residency program that allows artists and other creatives to live and work in China. In 2012 the exhibition “Two Generations: 20 Years of Chinese Contemporary Art Tours Australia” celebrated the gallery’s two-decade history.

One of the first contemporary art spaces of its kind in China, Three Shadows caters solely to international photography and video art practices. While the Ai Weiwei–designed center has 880 square meters of gallery space, the much larger complex also houses a library, darkrooms, production studios, classes and workshops, and an artist-in-residence program. Although Three Shadows operates as an NGO, its related +3 Gallery promotes artists professionally. Recent shows at the complex have ranged from Nobuyoshi Araki’s “Sentimental Journey/Decadence in Paradise,” featuring the Japanese photographer’s honeymoon pictures, to “The NORDOX Photo Exhibition,” highlighting the work of nine Scandinavian photojournalists.

They’ve since experimented with other projects that blur the boundaries between community and commerce: the Shop and the Pavilion, both in Beijing. Last year Vitamin Creative Space saw Hao Liang and Zheng Guogu take the project “Contemplate Shanshui - Sunny after Snow - The Great Visionary Transformation” to Art Basel Miami Beach; Lee Kit showed his solo presentation “The Scent of a Person” at Artissima in Torino; and Pak Sheung Chuen showed “Left & Right, Blue & Sky” at Frieze Art Fair London.

But its calling card is one of the top artists in Southeast Asia: I Nyoman Masriadi, the firebrand Indonesian painter whose paintings of cartoonish, muscular figures have dominated recent auctions. Last year, Gajah’s notable shows included “The Fountain of Lamneth,” featuring the work of up-and-coming artists from Bandung, Indonesia. Gajah also established Yogyakarta Art Lab, a venue for contemporary artists and local artisans to collaborate on specific projects. Yunizar was its first invited artist, and his works were shown at Art Stage Singapore 2013.

One of the pioneering institutions on the local Seoul art scene since 1983, Gana Art has maintained its influence through its keen eye for local art trends. The gallery has established leading auction house SeoulAuction, maintained a stronghold in now tourist-run Insa-dong with the Insa Art Space, and branched out into new media with the 99-by-78-meter digital canvas on the facade of the Seoul Square building. Earlier this year the gallery marked its 30th anniversary with an exhibition of local collectors’ favorite works called “My Friend, My Treasured Art.”
GALLERY HYUNDAI Seoul, South Korea Focus: Contemporary Artists: Robert Indiana, Jeon Joon-ho, Kim Tschang-Yeul, Moon Kyungwon, Thomas Struth
Founded in 1970, Gallery Hyundai was one of South Korea’s first commercial galleries and has since become an influential destination for veteran artists in the region. While programming is predominantly dedicated to established Korean names, major international artists are shown regularly. The past year saw Billy Childish make his South Korean debut with an exhibition of portraits of major literary figures Yi Sang and Yi Kwang-su; a retrospective on Kim Chong-hak; and a breakthrough showcase of erotic drawings from the Joseon Kingdom era (1392–1910), which were gently pried from hesitant collectors’ hands for the exhibition.
HAKGOJAE GALLERY Seoul, South Korea Focus: Contemporary Artists: Sea Hyun Lee, Yongbaek Lee, Kang Yobae, Noh Suntag, Song Hyun Sook

Last summer the gallery also spotlighted emerging Chinese artists with a group showcase marking the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and China. Other major exhibitions include a multi-disciplinary show of work by architect Kim Paik Sun, held earlier this year.
