An astonishing bridge in Taizhou received the Supreme Award for Structural Engineering Excellence at The Structural Awards 2013, held at The Brewery, London, on Friday, November 15.

Designed by the Jiangsu Provincial Communications Planning and Design Institute and the AECOM Asia Company Ltd, the world’s first long-span, three-tower suspension bridge has two main spans of over a kilometer each. The bridge carries six lanes of traffic across the Yangtze River.

According to the prize’s judges, “This enormous project was an extraordinary achievement, pushing the frontiers of suspension bridge technology to new heights. The judges feel that it lays out an excellent model for the future development of long-span bridges across the world.”

The Structural Awards 2013 named winners in 11 main categories, with winners of each eligible for the Supreme Award. Before taking the top honor, the Taizhou Bridge won the Highway or Railway Bridge category.

Another Chinese project, the much toutedChina Central Television Headquarterswon the category for best commercial or retail structure.

The Structural Awards were established in 1968. Three of the past four supreme winners have been bridges.
