Abramovic Among 100 Most Influential People

What do Vladimir Putin, Charlie Rose, Beyoncé, and Marina Abramovic have in common? They all made TIME magazine’s annual list of the “100 Most Influential People in the World.”Abramovic’s entry, which is written by James Franco (who else?), refers to the 67-year-old artist as the “presiding deity of performance art.”
“Marina most powerful is Marina most simple, Marina as Marina,” Franco wrote. “I love the simple Marina, the powerful Marina, when the artist is present within her. I trust Marina to carve the artist out of her celebrity and use her celebrity to bring what she stands for into the here and now, looking straight into the eyes of all of us, strangers still, but courageous, curious, inspired, creative participants afterward.”
The only other artist who made the list is Steve McQueen, who is obviously recognized for his Oscar-winning film “12 Years a Slave.” Author of “The Goldfinch,” Donna Tartt, whose Pulitzer Prize-winning book centers on the theft of a painting from the Met, was also included.
In other Abramovic news, Sean Kelly Gallery has just announced that they will present a solo exhibition of Abramovic’s work this October, almost 20 years after her inaugural show with the gallery in 1995. “We are delighted for Marina — that the contribution of her work and her contribution to the broader discourse socially has been acknowledged in such a prominent way,” Sean Kelly told ARTINFO in an email.
