Lord of the Rings Props Up for Sale at Bonhams

Bonhamswill be auctioning three movie props from the blockbuster Lord of the Rings, as part its “There’s No Place Like Hollywood” auction in New York on November 24. The props are part of the collection of actor Christopher Lee, who played the wizard Saruman in the award-winning trilogy and include Saruman's staff, as well as the hero Aragorn's sword, and a clapper board.

The metal staff, which is over six feet tall, is topped by a pronged resin crown that cradles a hand-blown glass orb and was used by Lee throughout the trilogy. It is estimated at $100,000‑150,000 (GB£62,500‑93,750), while 'Anduril', Aragorn’s sword, has an estimate of $150,000‑250,000 (GB£93,750‑156,250).

The sword (one of four for the film) was designed by master sword smith, Peter Lyon, some of whose work also sits in the royal armory of the Queen of England and is crafted from the highest quality steel. It was presented to Lee by the co-founder of Weta Workshop, Richard Taylor after the production in gratitude for his contribution.

The clapper board which wrapped the very last scene that Lee filmed in the final The Return of the King, carries an estimate of $6,000‑8,000 (GB£3,750‑5,000).

The props will be on display at Bonhams Knightsbridge salerooms in London July 31-August 4.
