Previously unseen early works of Henry Moore from the personal collection of his sister, Elizabeth Howarth, will make up the first major retrospective of the sculptor in over five years. Osborne Samuel gallery will show “Henry Moore: Sculpture and Drawings” from May 22-June 27 featuring early carvings, his earliest lithographs, and some of his most influential 1940s works.

The personal collection of Howarth will be shown to the public for the first time with pieces including Moore’s sculpture and drawings given to her as gifts in the 1920s-1930s. Highlights include a drawing and cast concrete sculpture of Howarth’s son as a baby and the earliest of Moore’s works such as academic drawings done while the sculptor was a student in Leeds.

The retrospective also features the rare ironstone “Head” from 1930, one of four made in the material, and a rare walnut carving dating to 1933. Other significant works from the 1940s include the Madonna and Child Family Group and wartime drawings from the Shelter Sketchbooks.

Not seen in public for more than 50 years is the lead work “Helmet,” a piece long thought lost. Osborne Samuel gallery was able to track it to a British Council travelling to Sweden in 1952; it was later shipped to the US and has been untraceable until now.

Giving context to the range of works, the exhibition features the work of renowned photographer Gemma Levine whose photos reveal Moore in his studio over the years. Moore saw photography as insight to the preparatory process of sculpting. Levine’s work has been featured in over 60 exhibitions around the world and has published three books on Moore.
