A unique Patek Philippe pocket watch with Suzanne Rohr enamel based on Pierre-August Renoir’s Two Sisters (1881) smashed estimates at Christie’s sale of Important Watches in New York on June 17, buoying the auction house’s sale total to $8.4 million.
The pocket watch, manufactured in Geneva in 1985, realized $353,000, against its pre-sale estimate of $120,000-$180,000, and was the top lot.
The second top lot was a Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co. Ref. 1436, an 18-karat gold split-seconds chronograph wristwatch manufactured in 1950 that $341,000, also above its estimate of $150,000-$250,000.
Achieving the third highest price was a Patek Philippe Ref. 2499 18-karat gold perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch with moon phases, manufactured in 1976 ($305,000).
“[Other] notable results include the sale of the Rolex Submariner Ref. 6538 with four-line dial which brought over four times the low estimate. With over 90% sold by lot and value, we see the depth in the market today for modern and vintage timepieces and the strength of the watches presented in our catalogue,” said John Reardon, International Head of Christie’s Watches, in a statement.
The auction offered 265 lots in total, including not just vintage and modern timepieces, but also pens. Additional top lots included a Vacheron Constantin and Cartier bracelet watch of 18-karat gold and diamond ($239,000) and a Patek Philippe 18-karat openface keyless lever watch with enamel miniature by G. Menni ($233,000).
