English artist Martin Creed’s first US retrospective, titled “The Back Door,” will fill the entire first floor of the Park Avenue Armory’s historic space this June. It will be the Armory’s largest ever single-artist installation. The exhibition will consist of sculptures, paintings, installations, performances, films, and video works that span the Turner Prize–winning artist’s twenty-year career.

“Martin’s sweeping vision for this unprecedented undertaking reflects our mission to provide a platform for artists to push the boundaries of their practice into unprecedented realms,” president and executive producer of Park Avenue Armory Rebecca Robertson said.

The gallery describes the show as a sensory experience for which Creed has transformed two of the gallery’s rooms into a vegan café and a bar. Also, a troupe of musicians will serenade visitors to the gallery with music composed and choreographed by the artist. During opening week, Creed will perform with his band in the drill hall and as a solo artist in the Armory’s board of officers room.

“Working across media, Martin strips away the unnecessary to reveal surprisingly human meditations of the structures that shape our lives, often with great humor and poignancy,” curator Tom Eccles said.

The show opens on June 8 and runs until August 7.
