What are the Vitals of Chinese Contemporary Art?

If you ask whether the contemporary art is in dilemma or not, all the auctions, galleries and media will give the “yes” answer all with one voice. While if you ask whether Chinese contemporary has values or not, you will get various answers from the critics, curators and intellectuals. Someone of them compare Chinese contemporary art to spring rolls (a kind of Chinese traditional good) or to McDonalds for the reason that Chinese contemporary is impressed with western style, though Chinese contemporary art is “made in China”. While the others who oppose the previous opinions prefer to reconstruct the Chinese style of Chinese contemporary art, but they are not confident as well.

Where will Chinese contemporary art go?

It is not ignorable that a large part of artists, no matter the prestigious artists or the unknown ones lost their process direction. Therefore, kinds of forums held by professional associations, universities, art organizations and collectors come in flocks. So do various large retrospective shows of reviewing 30 anniversary of Chinese contemporary art. Both the forums and retrospective shows aim at pointing out the vitals of Chinese contemporary art.

Here comes the question that where are the vitals of Chinese contemporary art.

The curators, critics and intellectuals think in accord that Chinese contemporary lost saying right. Or the criticism to contemporary art becomes voiceless. Then why does the criticism to contemporary art become voiceless? Take Jia Xianting, a leading artist in Chinese contemporary art in 1980s-1990s for example. He has cited “political Pope” and “Cynical Realism” to generalize Chinese avant-garde art after the idealism disillusioned in 1980s. He succeeded in spreading these two concepts to western galleries and collectors, as a result, Chinese contemporary art began to have its own market. However, Jia Xianting felt disillusioned himself the moment he learnt western galleries and collection market system. He became voiceless, for he felt in dilemma facing the market.

In a word, how to deal with the market is a problem when Chinese contemporary steps into the international market.

Although the present Chinese contemporary art is quiet different from that one decade ago, another leading artist like Jia Xianting hasn’t appeared yet. Absolutely, for Chinese critics, they haven’t given reasonable answer to the question how to confront market.

Further more, not only the critics, but the artists, curators, intellectuals, media, galleries, auction houses and collector are confused by this question. No matter the foams produced during the hot market or the confusion in the economic downturn today is brought in the improper understanding to the market. Meanwhile, how to establish new rules for the sustainable development of the polity, economy, culture and society is anther problem China has to face. Therefore, Chinese contemporary should take unique role in resolving this era problem and the critics should have the room to exert their talent.
