In a move that surprised many, Jeff Wall has left Marian Goodman, his gallery of over 25 years, the New York Times reported last week. The influential photographer is now represented by Gagosian, joining a roster that features an abundance of major photographers, including Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Gregory Crewdson, and Andreas Gursky.
Goodman responded to the announcement coolly when contacted by the Times: “We worked together for 25 good years. Sometimes things just come to an end. And it’s time for all to move on.”
“He would like to be seen more widely as an American artist,” Gagosian director Mark Francis told the Times. “I think that may be something we can do well.”
Gagosian’s star-studded roster has been in an unusual state of flux recently. William Eggleston, Yayoi Kusama, Richard Prince, and Julian Schnabel have all left the gallery in recent months, while Katarina Grosse joined the roster in July, and Damian Hirst rejoined in April, after a very public departure in 2012.
