“Old City in Jiao River” of Wu Guanzhong is regarded as a milestone in his art career. The masterwork is glinting in Chinese modern art history with profound influence. Sixteen years ago, in Hong Kong the “Old City in Jiao River” gained him the record of the highest price paid for work by a living Chinese artist that caused the attentions of the international art market. “Historians talk endless about the past dynasties and events when looking at the painting, while artists see the waves of history solidified in the up and downs of the surface and the thousands of years’ grains engraved in tumbled walls…”. This is the poetic notes written by Mr. Wu for his representative piece of “Old City by the Jiao River”. Facing this painting, people will naturally associate it with another similar work “The Ruins of Gaochang”, which broke the record of the auction result as high as HK$ 1,870,000 in 1989. Two years later, the “Old City by the Jiao River” refreshed the record with HK$2,550,000 and keep it to 2004. Mr. Wu is the only Chinese art master recognized by the western society. As the most important works in collectors’ minds of the whole world, It displayed on the Spring Preview Auction of 2007 of Beijing Poly Culture and Arts Co., Ltd in Hong Kong, which caused the wild attention of the international market. The copyright of this article belongs to Artron.net.
