New York Asian Art Fair More and More Contemporary

2007-04-11 15:11:10 未知

At a quarter to six on the evening of March 22, a group of well-dressed distinguished guest gathered in front of the gate of the Seventh Regiment Armory, holding the expensive tickets for the opening ceremony and doing nothing but waiting. Five minutes after, they crowded into a long line consciously. The situation can be described as jostling each other in a crowd. Why was everyone so hurry? The dealer by my side told me that they made utmost effort to buy good things! When the bell rang at six o’clock, those ladies and gentlemen crushed into the gate immediately.Besides the calendar of the art fair, the materials that guests took into the gate also included the information about Asia Society. The front of the card printed the “Blood Series” of Zhang Xiaogang, and the back of the card illustrated the arrangement of exhibitions: five video artworks of Chen Jieren will be shown in June, and Zhang Heng’s fifteen year retrospective exhibition will be launched in September! Art Society is an organization laid particular stress on the research and display of the ancient art of Asia, but now, as the curator Mellisa Chiu said clearly: “We become more and more contemporary.”In the exhibition hall, in addition to the Asian food, the most accretive part was Chinese contemporary art. In Barry Friedman’s gallery, there were artworks of Lin Tianmiao, Zhan Wang and Wang Jin; Dillon Gallery exhibited Chen Wenguang’s artworks which attracted so many people with its special material-oxydic mineral added with silver leaf and gold leaf, together with traditional Chinese painting; Micheal Goedhius brought artworks this time, including Mu Chen and Shao Yinong’s photography, sculpture of Li Zhen etc.; Marlborough Gallery exhibited the artworks of Chen Yifei, Zhao Woji, Tang Haiwen and other young artists; M.Sutherland Fine Arts brought wash paintings of Mr. Xu Guohuang and small sculptures of Chen Wenlingand; Zee Stone Gallery of Hong Kong also participated in this fair with the artworks of Xue Song. But besides Lin Song, there were no gallery directors of the mainland of China. On the part of the ancient art, there were still some galleries insisted on Chinese antiques such as Blitz Chinese Ceramic &works of art of Holland and Brian Harkins Oriental Art of Britain. While Oi Ling Gallery specialized in ceramics of Tang dynasty, Robert Hall offered Chinese snuff bottle. The director of the buddhist statue department of Hanhai Auction wanted to collect some artworks in this fair, but he was so disappointed found that only Tashi Tsering featured on the art of Tibet with limited works. Expect the contemporary artworks, the participant on the part of antiques was not only less than before but also much gloomier. Will it last to the nest year?
