A hundred international galleries and art organizations gathered in Shanghaimart for the opening of Shanghai Spring Art Salon on April 18. As the first art fair in the mainland of China, it undoubtedly becomes the vane of the Chinese art market. How the fifth Shanghai Art Salon competes with the hot international art fairs organized in China? The answer is that besides the four years’ experiences, the highlight of this salon is masterpieces of famous international classic artists and artworks of young artists. Galleries from all over the world bring the masterworks of Buffet, Corot Camille and S.Dali etc.; the Japanese master Hiroshi Senju exhibits the traditional Japanese painting; the works of contemporary artists such as Zhao Wuji, Zhang Xiaogang, Zhu Dequn, Takashi Myrakami and Yayoi Kusama are also displayed. Moreover, artworks of the local young artists are showed in the salon. These high quality works selected by the Salon’s art committee nearly cover all the categories including oil paintings, prints, installations and photography. Ge Qiantao pointed that the two art fairs in Beijing both focused on Chinese contemporary art, they were lack of the attention on classical arts. Considering the special culture and the market trend of Shanhai, the salon should take the local artists represented by Xu Beihong and Liu Haisu and the western classical artists into account. The collectors of Shanghai laid particular stress on classical art, which was ignored by the collectors of Beijing. Moreover, they also have placed great emphasis on young artists from the salon’s first beginning in 2003 till now.
