Serge Salat, designer of Pudong International Airport's stretching "wings," is bringing his internationally acclaimed installation work "Beyond Infinity" to China.Salat's gigantic installation piece (16 meters x 12 meters x 3.3 meters) will be set up in the atrium of Shanghai's shopping complex Plaza 66. Covering 600 square meters, the complicated artwork features three rooms, around 300 mirrors and at least 50 LCD screens. It weighs 15 tons. The exhibition opens July 19-22, 10am-10pm at 1/F, Plaza 66, 1266 Nanjing Rd W.A mystical and sensory journey awaits visitors who enter the compressed space of bright, three-dimensional colors as impressive as neo-impressionist paintings by artists such as Paul Signac and George-Pierre Seurat. The French artist has deliberately chosen the colors of the Forbidden City - red, gold, green and blue - for his maiden work in China. It brings together video art, computer art, electronic art, music, sculpture and architecture in one space, which turns out to be an evolving maze because of the reflections of the mirrors."It is meant to be a 'total environment'," says the artist who is also an architect and a writer. "You will be surrounded by sound, shapes and lights as soon as you enter the space."I'm creating my own personal cosmos, which is infinite, limitless and endless, a mathematically ordered universe," he says.Studying mathematics and pure science in school, Salat says that a mathematician is able to do many things, as many of us have learned in the movie "A Beautiful Mind.""Nowadays, there are no more boundaries between different disciplines or different arts," he continues. "It is interesting to be able to blend things to create new things."Having lived in China 25 years ago, the Toulouse native has a profound understanding of Chinese culture. It is said that his works have deep roots in Taoist philosophy as well as in Western Renaissance Neo-Platonism and they are said to epitomize the most advanced art thinking of the 20th century - the fourth dimension.Visitors will also enjoy the thrill of losing gravity, being elevated if they continue the adventure. They feel as if they became Alice in Wonderland as the mirrors amplify their surroundings."You will feel like walking in a space without limitation," the artist says. "I create these 'space games' to make people experience an endless universe and the fourth dimension. They don't have to understand the theories but they will realize that such things do exist and happen."Salat's works have been exhibited around the world, including in Milan, Copenhagen, New York, Chicago, Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, Bangkok and New Delhi.Salat was invited to China by General Motors Corp to promote the car manufacturer's latest luxurious model "Park Avenue." A Park Avenue car will be included in the work, which, according to Salat, is a great trial."It is really interesting to put things from the real world, such as a beautiful car, to create a mixture," he says. "There will also be two cameras on the site to record images of the audience and the car so that they will also see their images in the surrounding mirrors."It is natural for the audience to wonder where they are, whether they are in the universe or somewhere else," he says. "I enjoy playing with the subconscious of people."
