For those who are interested in contemporary Asian art, especially paintings and sculptures, Art Beijing 2007 may be a good place to go to. The large-scale art fair will be held in September at Beijing' s National Agricultural Exhibition Hall. The event, the second since " Art Beijing" was started in October 2006, aims to showcase the latest developments in contemporary art across the world.Art Beijing 2007 will select about 100 galleries from more than 200 applicants, said Dong Mengyang, executive director of Art Beijing, in an interview on Thursday with CRIENGLISH.com.Of the 100, Chinese galleries would take up 40%, while Asian and Western ones would account for 30% respectively, said Dong.Last year the list included the Asia Art Center from Taiwan, Poligrafa Gallery from Spain, Vanessage Art Link from Malaysia and White Space from Germany. This year the exposition will be held in both the new and old buildings in the National Agricultural Exhibition Hall, covering an area of 20,000 square meters, more than double that of last year. In the old building there will be exhibitions under different themes, while the new building will give full place to commercial galleries.Original works of young Chinese and Asian contemporary artists will form part of the lineup of the four-day art show scheduled from Sept. 20 to 23. In a " Youth Art Zone" , the audience will be able to communicate with the artists in person. A good combination of academic and commercial values has been the guideline of Art Beijing, said the executive director. Deals valued at over 200 million yuan or US$26 million were signed during last year' s Art Beijing 2006, he said.In the long term, Art Beijing is expected to become the best exposition of contemporary Asian art, and to bring a prosperous art market to China, Dong Mengyang said.
