Interactive Art Exhibition Appeals to Young People

Here's an art form that has no trouble at all in attracting youthful enthusiasm. "New Media Art! No spectators allowed, Passive viewing is prohibited." These are among the first principles at China's First International Interactive Art Exhibition: to appreciate interactive art you have to feel it; be a part of it. Unlike traditional art forms like painting or sculpture, that can be materialized and objectified, new media art is different. It is differentiated by its iconic forms, relying heavily on technical support. It is an art form that depends on the viewer's participation. Eleven artists from nine countries, including Japan, Austria and the U.S., bring their works to China's First International Interactive Art Exhibition. It's all about raising awareness of the new art and the technology making it possible. Du Zhengjun, artist, said, "Technology is a means to civilization. It creates the illusion that we control our environment, or what sometimes we call 'Nature'. So this is a second Nature, meant to control the original. Obviously this is impossible." The art work "Weightlessness", brought by an Austrian artist, "visualizes" invisible gravity by relating people's unbalanced state with changes on an electronic web. And the "Tear Killer" resembles a comic strip, but to really get the idea, you have to be able to turn the pages quickly enough. The exhibition runs till August 12th.
