Clifford Possum Painting Sells for Record $2.4m at Sotheby's Auction

A dot painting by Indigenous artist Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri broke the existing record for an Aboriginal artwork at auction in Melbourne 24th,July.His Warlugulong painting sold for $2.4 million, including the buyer's premium.Sotheby's spokesman Tim Klingender says the sale broke the earlier record price for an Aboriginal artwork of $1.56 million and shows the acceptance of Aboriginal art in Australia."It is an amazing result ... for Aboriginal art and Sotheby's and the art market, for the whole movement," he said. "It is an astonishing event and it will be a while before this record is probably broken. "The painting was a really great painting and it deserved to make a really fantastic price, and it made that price."
