Shanghai Holds Exhibition to Celebrate Special Olympics

The competition is near the finish, as artists and illustrators vie for the right to have their designs chosen as mascots and posters for the 2007 Shanghai World Special Olympics. An exhibition of submissions opened to the public in Shanghai Wednesday. It's an opportunity for visitors to enjoy all the designs up-close. It's meant to inspire more public awareness and support for the games in October. There are 58 entries. They are candidates for games mascots and for promotional posters. Most are being seen by the public for the first time.Although there is a diversity of styles and a wide range of designs, all extend good wishes and affection for disabled athletes worldwide. A visitor said, "The exhibit makes us know more about the Special Olympics. And I think no matter what result comes out, one can still be called the winner as long as he tries his best."A campaign encouraging design submissions for mascots and posters for the 2007 Shanghai World Special Olympics began in June 2006. When submissions closed three months later, there were 525 mascot designs and 958 entries to be considered for games posters. More than 1000 artists from home and abroad sent in their work. Elimination rounds followed. Now entering the finals of the competition, 58 candidates have made it to the inner circle. And they're on public display.
