Zhang Jian was born in 1968. His works, just like the era in which he was born, are a link between the preceding and the following generations. Zhang's works from 1997 to 2007 show a clear personality, sorrow, nostalgia and details of life reflecting the status of individuals during the change of an era. The painter took the perspective of an outsider, "like lingering fog overshadowing a canvas". Uncertainty, sentiment and the beauty of light and shadows of Zhang Jian's works establish an atmosphere of freedom and a poetic language.
