A high ranking official of the Ministry of Culture has denied allegations of the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that Polish authorities did not want to consider claims for handing over German objects of art which can be found mostly on territories returned to Poland as a result of the westward shift of borders under the Yalta agreements. The decision had been made by the victorious Allies in World War Two. Director Jacek Miller of the Department for Polish Cultural Heritage Abroad told Polish Radio consultations on the matter are presently conducted with the German side by the Foreign Ministry in Warsaw. He voiced hope they will bring positive solutions. It is known that, for example, the collection of the Prussian Library is in Poland after being evacuated from Germany during the war. Poland, in turn, had been deprived of some 60 thousand works of art and more than 50 million volumes of precious books in the same period. Jacek Miller said the inventory of lost objects of art is not yet complete. The Ministry of Culture is still compiling a list of items which had remained in territories east of the present Polish borders, which were lost due to the changes in Europe's post-war territorial order. Poland has also been conducting talks regarding the return of its property of cultural heritage with Russia and Ukraine. So far, only several dozen listed items have found their way back to Polish collections.
