Between the end of 19 century and beginning of 20 century, China had experienced a disastrous era. But as to Chinese women, the time evoked their disillusion of freedom. Walked out from home and away from the apprenticeship learning, the painting-fond women tried to obtain formal artistic training in academic fine art schools, and even studied abroad. The boarder horizon helped them gloried in the pages of China’s modern fine art history. In the nation’s difficult time, they also took paintings as weapons in the revolutionary reforms. However, rooted anti-feminism ideology had greatly limited their development on the art. At the 1950s and 1960s, Chinese women were much independent in their social status. However regretfully, the works by the female artists lacking of reflection on the gender issues were accountable to the existence of gender inequality. Since 1990s, contemporary female artists tend to seeking for self-value. They immerse the unparalleled life experience and exquisite emotion into the works, and display cognitive and thinking ways different from that of males. The exhibits composed of Chinese traditional paintings, oil paintings, water color, gouache paintings and comics are numerous. It is expected to showcase the contemporary and modern history of female fine art, and the evolution of women’s life, social status and roles.
