On September 20, 2007, the NY Sotheby presented the second sale of Asian Contemporary Art, in which the Chinese contemporary art accounts for 90% in the total number of 275 lots with the whole estimated price of 19,200,000 to 27,700,000 US. The Asian Contemporary Art Auction has raised the international upsurge on Chinese contemporary Art once, but it has never been pre-showed in mainland of China. On August 28, the experts of NY Sotheby took two important artworks to exhibit in Beijing, following that, the two works will meet with others in Shanghai for the HK Sotheby’s Autumn Auction Preview. These two art pieces represent the two directions of Sotheby’s desire to promote the art market in mainland collectors. One is contemporary art and another one is realistic oil paintings. Zhang Xiaogang’s early work “Chapter of a New Century - Birth of the People’s Republic of China” was created in 1992 (est. $1.5/2.5 million). In this painting, the central image is that of a reddish baby reclining in a towel on top of a wooden chest, looking at the viewer with wide eyes and an open book before him. The baby is emblematic of a fledgling Red China in the Modern world, while the locked chest with its unknown contents may refer to both the problems and possibilities hidden away in the new government and its historical legacy; another work is also an early work from the represented artist of Chinese realistic oil paintings Chen Yifei. The highlight is called “The Cellist 1983”, estimated to sell for $800,000/1 million. The oil depicts the image of a strikingly attractive young musician dressed in black, who is portrayed drawing her bow across the muted, deep reddish brown of her instrument. Her face, arms and hands are brilliantly highlighted against the dark tones of the cello and the black of the background, and the portrait demonstrates Chen’s mastery of detail.Wang Yuling, the expert of NY Sotheby’s Chinese contemporary art introduced that most collectors who buy Chinese contemporary art works are westerners, the Chinese collectors just account for 10%. Generally speaking, the collector group of big installations, conceptual art and videos are in the Western countries. No matter Zhang Xiaogang’s “Contemporary”, or Chen Yifei’s “Realistic”, the easel paintings are still the most attractive work forms to the collectors in mainland of China. According to the weaken of Chinese contemporary art market, Ms. Wang said the speed less-rising price just illustrates the accuracy of these works’ estimated price and the market develops more mature than before. She has a better expectation for the future.
