Yachts, matches, movies and more will be on show along Suzhou Creek in the next few years. Seven museums are being built along the creek, the government of the Putuo District said. The yacht museum will be completed by the end of this year and will display pictures and models of a variety of boats concentrating on yachting culture although Dragon Boats will also receive attention. The yacht museum is in Changfeng which will be developed into a landmark one-million-square-meter green commercial business area. A ferry wharf has been completed there, the first of total three which are being built along Suzhou Creek before the end of next year. The first boat pier will open for business later this year and from it visitors will be able to catch ferries or hire boats to visit Dianshan Lake. A match museum is also being built in Changfeng on the site of the original Shanghai Match Factory. The original jagged factory plant and a chimney will be preserved as part of the museum which will also house historic documents, pictures and artifacts. "Setting up the museum is a key part of the plan to preserve the factory which illustrates the development of national industries along Suzhou Creek," said Zhu Yuedi, an official of the Suzhou Creek Office. "The museum will also play a key role in promoting the city's match history and culture," she said, adding that they had begun assembling some unique pieces from collectors. Other museums along the Creek will showcase matchbook covers, coins, textiles, relics and traditional art. The construction of another water control museum will also begin soon on an archaeological site in Putuo. The site, more than 700 years old, was found by workers building a residential complex in 2001. Covering 1,600 square meters, it was one of the flood control systems built in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). The digging for the archaeological work has been completed by the Shanghai Cultural Relics Management Commission which is now working on new techniques to safeguard the rare underground relics. MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) World, an entertainment complex featuring cinemas, high-tech amusement games, restaurants and shops, will also be completed in Changfeng by 2010.
