Always devoted to discovering and bringing forth emerging artists, Beijing New Age Gallery will hold Zhong Shan’s Solo Exhibition on Sept. 21st 2007. The theme of this exhibition is “The Art of Double Images”, which derives from the artist’s unique creating concept, artistic expression and his unique reflections on men, events and things in the today’s society. “Double images”, literarily, “double” means “in pairs”; “image” means “appearance”, “figure” and “looking”, and it also has the meaning of “examination”, “observation” and “the result of comparison”. In Zhong Shan’s artworks, “Double images” art has man’s appearance and figure as the subject, and expresses in the form of “diptych”. The two works are placed side by side, and can be compared and observed, expressing the meaning of two in one and the relationship between concepts such as the internal and the external, ego and alter ego, real image and virtual image, sense and sensibility, spirit and material, double image and corresponding and so on. His art shows that the artist is reflecting the contemporary society from a special view angle and that the symbols bearing the weight of human social and historical culture and contemporary ideology occur in various changing characters, showing the colorful world of today. The unique form of expression adopted by the artist is derived from “mirror image”. Maybe, mirror image is a symbol which is outside the subject but at the same time locates the subject. The subject identifies itself in the relationship with the mirror image as an object. Mirror image is another self, a dissimilated another one and an unreal illusion, which reflects the real subject and inspires the artist to reflect on and contemplate his self, people, events, things and even the contemporary society. Maybe, living in the world (society) is living imaginarily in the relationship between man and the reality of the world. People, events and things all have their own exhibiting images. The corresponding relationship between reality and imagination just shows contemporary people’s natural individuality and personality split, and the dialectic relationship between real and unreal, true and false, good and bad. Through The art of double images, Zhong Shan thoroughly discloses people’s concealed psychological structure and its complicated relationship with the socio- cultural network.This exhibition will present the artist – Zhong Shan’s art completely.
