You may not know of anyone named "Lao Wan", nor heard his name. But he is there among us all the same. "Lao Wan" is the migrant worker - the man who travels from place to place, laying the bricks, picking the fruit or doing other itinerant work away from his home town. "Being Three" Art Gallery in Beijing: another exhibition opens. Visitors taking time to read the wall texts soon understand, the show is about one man, "Lao Wan." He may be found in many places at the same time. Though there are many Lao Wan's, Lao Wan is always one man, the migrant worker, the outsider wherever he goes. "Lao Wan" is the creation of painter/performance artist Wang Gang, It's the name he has given all images of the migrant workers who are the principal subjects of his paintings. The present exhibition is a retrospective, tracing the evolution of the artist and his art. Through all the works, one thing remains unchanged, unvarying. It's the weathered face that conceals as much as it reveals, the face of Lao Wan. Two decades ago, Wang painted a portrait of a migrant worker. The man's surname was "Wan". While working on the portrait, the artist gradually developed a strong e bond to the man who sat for the painting. When the painting was complete, Wang decided migrant workers would become the focus of his artistic experimentation in the years to come. Whatever form Wang uses to explore life and the inner world of this special group he gives the work the title, "Lao Wan." He's depicted in oil painting, sculpture, video and performance art.
