Li Lanqing Seal Cutting Art Exhibition Opens in Russia

The "Li Lanqing Seal Cutting Art Exhibition" is underway as part of "the Year of China in Russia" cultural exchange. China's former Vice Premier cut an impressive figure himself in St. Petersburg. Former Vice Premier Li Lanqing attended the opening. Over 100 seal cutting works by Li Lanqing are on display. Divided in six categories, these chops provide deep insight into Li's academic background and exquisite carving techniques. Collectively, the works allude to the cultural evolution, social development of the Chinese people and their time-honored bond with Russia. Seal cutting is an ancient Chinese art form in which intricate characters are carved from stone. The completed works are used to mark official or personal seals. During his visit, Li also visited the St.Petersburg State University, where he was awarded an honorary doctorate.This showing, marks the first time Chinese seal carving has been exhibited in Europe. The exhibit will be displayed successively at the University of St. Petersburg, the University of Moscow and the 1984 Middle School.
