Araki Nobuyoshi was born in 1940 in Tokyo, after he graduated from the photography and film department of Chiba University, Japan, he began working as a professional photographer in advertisement. With the impact of living in the brothel quarter from his childhood, his works are dominated thematically with prostitution, and is often considered disturbing within the circle of critics. He loved photography his entire lifetime, taking photographs everyday became a must-do for him. In the course of his lifetime, he published over 300 albums of photography, his imagination on sex demonstrated no sense of taboo, rather has nakedly presented people’s body in his photographs. Overall, his works are in between art and the obscene, and is devoted to photographing his pure imagination on sex and maximized in representing people’s subconscious sexual desires. His works are filled with the scenes of the nightlife and the moist sexual tension, the ostentatious neon lights emits barbarism, characterized with brutal sexual desire, the woman – devastated, in tears and desperate. The artist believed they represent the most primitive desire, although not necessarily real. This exhibition is devoted in showcasing the most representative works by Araki, works representing sexual love from the 1960’s to 2000 of the series Love Flowers, he attempts to present the female instincts and vitality with the assistance of the beauty of the flower, through which the artist’s concept on life and death is also revealed. With this exhibition, we will relive the memories of Araki Nobuyoshi’s world of photography, and re-experience the diversity of the human instinct hidden in our subconscious world. The exhibition opens on Sep. 22. — Oct. 31. 2007 at Beijing Keumsan Gallery.
