Significant American Painters: Past and Current
2007-09-24 17:19:03 未知
Paintings by significant 20th Century American realists Moses Soyer, and twin brother Raphael Soyer will be on view in conjunction with contemporary artist William Gothard, a pupil of the Soyers in the 1950s, to rising New York City realist Steven Asseal, cubist collage artist Ken Kewley and other artists represented by Forum Art Gallery, Friday, September 7, to Saturday, October 6, at eDavid Gallery, 535 Main Street, Bethlehem, PA. The Soyers emigrated from Russia to New York City in 1912. At the urging of their intellectual Jewish father, they pursued the arts, eventually studying with renowned artists of the era, including George Bellows and others from the Ash Can School of Painting. The Soyer’s separate realistic styles often depict with sensitivity the colorful street life of New York City circa 20s and 30s. As adults, the Soyer twins rarely worked or studied together. However, both Moses and Rapheal Soyer were commissioned to paint murals for the Works Progress Association (WPA) during the Great Depression. Noted for realistic nudes and lively, furtive figures, the works of realist expressionist William Gothard are in the collections of Dustin Hoffman and Mr. and Mrs. William Scully. Gothard studied under the Soyer twins at the New York Art Student’s League in the 1950s. Represented by the Forum Gallery, works by internationally noted realist painter Steven Asseal will be on exhibit, as will the powerfully rich, cubist collage art and paintings by Ken Kewely, Easton, PA, who has exhibited work around the globe.
