Photographs of footprints thought to be those of the mythical "Yeti" go under the hammer at Christie's Auctioneers in London. All the items on auction carry the aura of mystery and adventure. For bidders it's a chance to acquire a piece of History. Two hundred and fifty lots went on sale from some of the world's leading explorers and adventurers. Christie's two day auction is dedicated to exploration and travel. Nicholas Lambourne, Christie's, said, "These are great stories, these are real ripping yarns from the past and as we move into a more technological age that these extra ordinary feats of these early explorers is more and more appreciated I think, so there are a lot of collectors out there who are keen really to get a piece of history really in these sales".Amongst the artefacts: four photographs taken in the Himalayas in 1951. The mysterious giant footprint is believed by many to be the imprint of the mythical Yeti. A pickaxe handle and a man's boot are shown adjacent, revealing the relative size of the print. On the back of the photo is a note from mountaineer Tom Bourbouillion. The note attests that the print is unlike that of any beast known to live in the Himalayas. There's also a recently discovered masterpiece by painter William Hodges. "Matavani Bay in Otahite" is one of the few extant examples of his work in Tahiti during Captain Cook's second Pacific voyage of discovery. The sale attracted bidders from around the world, showing the continuing interest among collectors in British adventure and travel history.
