A new creative space for designers and artists has opened in Pudong in eastern Shanghai, named after the late Chinese artist, film director and fashion designer Chen Yifei.Yifei Originality Street features 15 geometric buildings clad in colored glass and metals along Zhangjiabang river, opposite Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.After two years' construction, the street on Jinyan Road has attracted dozens of foreign and domestic creative industries, said Yifei Originality Industry Development Co.Chen, who died at the age of 59 in 2005 and was one of China's foremost contemporary artists and entrepreneurs, picked out the 22,000-square-meter site in 2004 for its ideal location.The 792-meter-long street features open green spaces, waterside platforms, a boating dock, and a pedestrian bridge over the river.Theme pubs, restaurants, art shops and nightclubs have also been set up along the street, which features landscape lighting on trees and walls, with a central plaza."So far 40 percent of the buildings are occupied by dozens of domestic and foreign innovative companies and workshops," said a company official surnamed Hu.The company plans to build a vehicle bridge between the street and Shanghai Science and Technology Museum."The second and third phase of the street construction will extend along Yanggao Road S. and Jinxiu Road to as far as Century Park," Hu said. "It's expected to become the city's hottest distinctive tourist destination."The city already has two creative and design industry centers downtown: Tianzifang Workshop on Taikang Road and the 8th Bridge on Jianguo Road M.
