Singapore designers are setting their sights global with a design exhibition, titled HYBRICITY: SINGAPORE, making its world premiere in Beijing during Singapore Season China 2007. Organised by the DesignSingapore Council, under the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, the exhibition is the culmination of a DesignSingapore Studios’ project that produced new content by seven Singapore designers and designer-makers. The exhibition will be held from 13 to 21 October in Beijing before it returns to Singapore for the Singapore Design Festival in November. Although small, Singapore brims with ideas and inspirations that are drawn from its various cultures. Here, designers and designer-makers inherit insights from their own ethnic cultures that are rich and diverse in addition to imbibing from a wider international confluence of cultural resources. Geographically and historically, Singapore has successfully fostered a merging of eastern and western sensibilities, stimulating the growth of a unique hybrid. The designers and designer-makers who are participating hail from diverse design backgrounds and their works represent their interpretation of HYBRICITY. They are:Lim Sau Hoong – Visual communications (Project Studio Master),Tan Kay Ngee – Architect (Project Studio Master),Shing – Jewellery Designer,Ashley Isham – Fashion Designer,Donna Ong – Designer-maker,Jessie Lim – Designer-maker,Play Imaginative – Toy Designer. Dr Milton Tan, Director of DesignSingapore Council, said: “One of the great privileges of designing is exercising the imagination – to think up possibilities, develop concepts, transform and represent ideas in reality, advancing better ways to enable others to realise their human potential and enhancing their quality of life.” Elaborating on the theme of HYBRICITY, Dr Tan added that Singapore’s ethnic diversity has created fertile grounds for stimulating the growth of a unique hybrid: “In circumstances of stimulating, rich and diverse possibilities, ideas emerge. To be sure, these situations seldom come ready-made; tenacious designers shape them, often bringing additional things to the ‘party’, much like a creative chef who cooks up a surprising variation to a recipe.”Singapore will have a second design presence during Singapore Season in China. Phunk Studio will be participating in the first Animamix Biennial being organized in collaboration with Shanghai eArts Festival, China's first and the world's electronic media arts festival. From 19 to 23 October, the world's leading arts and media figures will gather to showcase the best in digital arts, against the backdrop of Shanghai's vibrant cultural life.Besides these two exhibitions, Ashley Isham’s fashion will also be showcased in a fashion show at the respective Gala Dinners in Beijing and Shanghai. The fashion segment will feature Singapore creative talents like Fashion Show Producer Daniel Boey and Music Composer Iskander Ismail. A hair stylist team and models from Singapore, including international model Junita Simon, will also be part of the show.
