The venerable Chinese art of calligraphy always has served as a meditative focus, for immersing Chinese literati, into a state of open mindedness. The art emphasizes harmony between brush, body and Nature. That meditative harmony, explains a flourishing revival, as people return to calligraphy amid the pressures of an increasingly fast paced world. And that is the spirit of a new national calligraphy exhibition in the Chinese capital. The Beijing International Calligraphy Biennial opened Tuesday at one of Beijing's monumental landmarks, the Taimiao Temple. Nearly a thousand works went on show. Most were based on the Olympics theme. The works were by famed calligraphers such as Ouyang Zhongshi and Shen Peng as well as teenage calligraphy fans.
