Zha Ran, also known as tie-dye art is widely seen on clothes and ornaments of the people in southwest China's Yunnan province. Now there's a tie-dye art institute in the ancient Yunnan town of Zhaxi. The rich tie-dye collections add a new attraction for visitors. The newly established tie-dye art institute in Zhaxi houses tie-dye calligraphy and paintings. The art is produced by dying cloth after it has been tied or crinkled. The distinctive folk art was created by people living in Yunnan, in particular. The town of Zhaxi enjoys some renown for its locally produced art pieces. Li Shengjiang, president of Zhaxi Tie-dying Art Institute, said, "Tie-dying is a traditional art that originated by the Miao ethnic group. It's also a cultural tradition in Zhaxi. We set up the institute to promote the art, and to make it synonymous with Zhaxi." Adding to the cultural refinement of Zhaxi is a newly erected art gallery called Hui Bao Zhai. The collections range from genuine works by contemporary calligraphers like Shen Peng, and Ouyang Zhongshi, to some high quality replicas of works by famous painters Fu Baoshi, Zhang Daqian and Xu Beihong. The gallery also highlights the revolutionary tradition of the town with an exhibit of historical pictures of the Red Army marching through Zhaxi, during the Long March.
