A jewelry exhibition highlighting European history is now on in Brussels to celebrate 50 years since the setting up of the European Union. We take a look at a show featuring treasures from royal families across the EU. Hundreds of items on display range from the Renaissance period to the early 20th century. Many come from European royal collections, and include 18th century diamond rings and necklaces side by side with sixteen sparkling crowns from the 19th and 20th centuries. Most of the exhibits are on loan from major museums in Europe, including the Louvre in Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK. Several items come from private collections. Some are appearing in public for the very first time. One of the centerpieces is one entitled "Drake". It was a gift from Queen Elizabeth the first to Sir Francis Drake . The renowned navigator was credited with strengthening Britain's dominance on the sea by fighting off the Spanish. He also helped the Queen foil a coup in 1588. The exhibition will run till February 17th next year. A multimedia display of old photos of royal families is also on show, helping visitors gain insight into the history and stories behind the jewelry.
