Artists'Contemporary Round is a Kind of Self-Justification

In one of his essays Upstairs in the Restaurant, Mr. Lu Xun wrote: we human beings are sometimes like little flyers -- we take off and circle around only to come back to where we set off. The short sally resembles a small circle. He was of course talking about the trajectory of life. Having traveled thousands miles and read over thousands books, we often find our selves back where we took our first steps. A circle of one’s footprints, is it not? The same may be true also of artistic creation. In the beginning, we are all sincerity, passion, obsession, devotion and hard work, but once on the road, we will soon realize that the world is so big that it is impossible portray it on our canvas. As we travel still further, we find that the world becomes apparently so small that sometimes we can hardly find enough room for an easel to stand. Then we become practical, commercially oriented and sophisticated, that is “worldly wise” and “experienced in the way of life”. Perhaps it is out of common sense and human kindness or our devotion to art, we come back to our starting point like the symbolic little flyer, but not after some long circular trips. It’s a life cycle or art cycle, be it long or short. As if by accident, early this fall, Cao Ji Gang, Zhang Cong Yun, Kang Lei and I all started to paint on round canvas or objects. These paintings, offering an insight into our individual world, comprise the present show.Varied as they are in themes and form, matters and manners, these works trace their creators’ footprints either in life or artistic creation, which resemble circles at different stages: at the beginning, in the process, or at the end. Any encounter can be called a circle. Lu Xun also wrote in his essay that the flyer returned having accomplished nothing but a round trip. Could it not make a longer trip? A circular trip is not big deal. What really matters is a bigger height and a longer distance. May we all fly higher and further. May this exhibition have a successful round trip. The exhibition opens on 3rd November – 15th December 2007 at ANNI ART 798 Art Zone.
