"Couple Dancing on the Terrace," a painting by the Dutch old master, sold for 5 million euros ($7.4 million) at an Amsterdam art fair. The 17th-century picture was bought by a private collector, who was not named by organizers of the art and antiques fair pAn Amsterdam in an e-mailed statement. Nobody was immediately available for comment at the Maastricht, Netherlands-based Noortman Master Paintings, which sold the work. Steen's "Couple Dancing" shows a young man and woman dancing at a feast and was painted in 1663. The artist, who lived from 1626 to 1679 and spent most of his life in the Dutch town of Leiden, was a contemporary of Rembrandt. Most of his work displays scenes from everyday life, such as "The Feast of St. Nicholas" (around 1660), a children's party which is still celebrated every year on the evening of Dec. 5. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, whose drawing cards include Rembrandt's "The Night Watch"(1642), in April 2004 bought Steen's "A Burgomaster of Delft and His Daughter"(1655) for 11.9 million euros.
