The background of Tian Taiquan’s work lies in the graveyard of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Tian Taiquan began working with the subject of the ‘Red Guard graveyard’ in Chongqing in 2005 and it has since become the theme surrounding his artworks; contained in a series of shows including, Mark, Totem Recollection and Legend. The complexity of the Cultural Revolution is highlighted through artistic insight in Tian Taiquan’s depiction of this significant period of Chinese history. Considering the delicate matters of politics, culture and society, these works inspired from the Cultural Revolution express a sense of anonymity and hesitation, becoming a topic that people are reluctant to neither recall nor forget. Within the series titled Mark, Tian Taiquan places female figures, naked or in military uniform, among official Communist Party-colored monuments and desolate graveyards creating a abandoned yet enigmatic atmosphere. Death is covered in dust symbolized by fossilized graves, yet the uncertainty of life and its prospects are somehow maintained in these pale, simple and soulless bodies. Beyond the depiction of recent Chinese history, in the eyes of artist, the memorial graveyard becomes a theatre of ghosts of past, present and future.Though centered on the Chinese Cultural revolution, by looking at the recent history of the last century, Tian Taiquan’s photographs are applicable to present day and are likewise, universally understood. The echibition opens on December 7th, 2007 - January 20th,2008 at Shanghai.
