Once cultural artifacts are discovered the next step is to preserve them, especially in the face of modern urban development. Local planning authorities in Chongqing are preparing a landmark scheme in their southwest municipality to preserve cultural relics. Over the next five years, the local government will transform most of Yuzhong District into a cultural zone to protect its former glories. Yuzhong Lower Town will become the site of a cultural relics protection zone. The area used to be one of the largest business zones in Southwest China during the reign of Emperor Guangxu in the late Qing Dynasty.Starting early next year, all the unsafe buildings in the area will be knocked down to make room for an exhibition of the district's relics.Local authorities will also restore some of the time-honored ancient buildings in the area.
