Sometimes when urban expansion eats away at old neighborhoods and buildings all that remains of the past are the impressions of artists. Some of London's most popular landmarks portrayed by leading British artists are for sale at Bonham's Auction House. "One Hundred Views of London" brings together the work of renowned artists representing over two centuries of artwork. "One Hundred Views of London", brings together work by some of the most iconic artists from the past two hundred years. Their views of the capital city are displayed at Bonham's Knightsbridge. Bonham's says the sale offers art lovers a chance to acquire artwork reflecting the changing face of London. Jeremy Waite, Bonhams in Knightsbridge, said, "We just wanted to have a sale that reflected the eclectic mix of the capital both in terms of landscapes and people who've lived in the capital and just the wide variety of art that associated with London over the past couple of hundred years." One of the most prized items at the sale is "Nightshift" by Alexander Stanhope Forbes. Railway workers are depicted against the backdrop of the London landscape at night, including St. Paul's Cathedral. The work represents a departure from Forbes's normal artistic interests. Jeremy Waite said, "It's an interesting painting because it's by Alexander Stanhope Forbes who's a very important Newlyn artist who's much more often associated with Cornish painting and Cornish coastal scenes, so its rare of him to do a London scene, but it's a good vision of how London was in the early Twentieth Century and the work that was going on, and he was very interested in the working life of the everyday person." Not much is known about the life of John Paul. Several of his paintings of Eighteenth Century London are listed in the sale. His work is set apart by its precision and distinctive architectural style. One painting shows Westminster Bridge. Another Rosamunds Pool in St James's Park. A more contemporary work is a water colour by living artist Anne Langford Dent. The eighty five year old painted the scene of Trafalgar Square reflecting modern London life. "One Hundred Views of London" is an opportunity to acquire a piece of history or a contemporary scene that captures for a moment the changing face of the British Capital.
