A Francis Bacon painting sold for 13.7 million euros ($20.2 million) at a Paris auction tonight in another sign that Sotheby's is expanding in the fourth-largest art market. Bacon's "Seated Woman," a 1961 portrait of London bartender Muriel Belcher, went to an unnamed bidder in the auction room, a Sotheby's spokeswoman said. The painting had a top estimate of 10 million euros before fees. The price before fees was 12.2 million euros, or about 20 percent above the top estimate. Last year, just 13 auction lots sold for more than 1 million euros in the French capital, according to the data service Artprice.com. Sotheby's, which bought French auctioneer Calmels Cohen in March, sold 38.4 million euros of art in France in the first six months of this year, compared with 23.7 million euros a year earlier. Sotheby's placed third in the Paris leagues, behind Christie's International and Artcurial. Hong Kong has overtaken Paris as Sotheby's and Christie's third-largest auction market, after New York and London.
