Does "7501 ceramics" ring a bell for you? It does for collectors who pay high prices for the exquisite porcelain tableware produced exclusively for Chairman Mao in the mid-1970s.The porcelains of the highest quality were produced in Jingdezhen, China's famed porcelain capital in Jiangxi Province, by the Ceramics Institute of China Light Industry. The series numbers "7501" stand for 1975 and the No. 1 project ordered by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. They were first delivered in September 1975.The porcelains were refined and artistic, smooth, bright and translucent with elegant characters and traditional designs of colored flowers, leaves and fruit on a luminous white. Now artist Lu Chuntao is cooperating with the Ceramics of Institute for a limited edition of porcelain tea sets. The updated "7501" designs are on exhibit."In order to give the 7501 ceramics a new look, I used some traditional images infused with an elegant and modern touch. They are not the stereotyped ones," says Lu.The new design and craftsmanship produce a high-end luxury item, much more than a drinking vessel.Lu and the institute are now working on their next series, purely art pieces. "I hope that the former mysterious '7501' stamp will come to more ordinary families," says Lu.The exhibition opens through December 31, 11am-4pm.
