Renowned Chinese Painter Situ Qiao Art Retrospect Exhibition Opens

Situ Qiao (1902-1958) was a renowned Chinese painter. In 1928, he traveled to France to learn painting while doing some odd jobs to support himself. He left for the United States in 1930 and returned to China a year later to take up a teaching position at Lingnan University. He went to Burma in 1938 and traveled to Malaysia and Singapore the following year. In the 1940s, he embarked on a painting journey across the northwestern, southwestern and southern regions of China. In 1946, he left for the United States for medical treatment. In 1950, on the ship on his way back to China, he created the "Three Old Chinese Workers" painting, which illustrated the hard life of the old generation of ethnic Chinese in the United States. Besides oil painting, Situ Qiao was also adept at sketching, Chinese painting, watercolor painting and book illustrations. His works mostly portray the life of people at the bottom rung of the social ladder and are thought-provoking. His paintings are characterized by a natural style. He combined Chinese and Western painting techniques and was skillful in capturing people's emotions and psychic changes.The exhibition opens at Guangzhou Museum of Art from 2007-11-23~2008-02-28.
