Ancient Houses Excavated and Restored in Italy

Two houses of ancient Rome are unveiled, reborn to grace the basement of a government office building in Italy's capital. They are two upper-class homes, located, excavated, then restored to their ancient grace with the aid of high technology. The excavated area is in the basement of the Palazzo Valentini. The building houses the offices of the Province of Rome. Now it also houses a fascinating fusion between the archaeological remains of a Roman domus and virtual reconstruction. Paola Baldassari, co-director of the Palazzo Valentini excavations, says the palazzo was "part of a residential upper-class neighborhood. Roman senators and knights probably lived there." Visitors to the Palazzo Valentini excavation will be taken back to the glory of the Imperial Roman. Here, while walking along the corridor, they will see frescos and marble adornments, created through the clever use of projectors and virtual reality special effects. Piero Angela, co-director of Virtual Reality Reconstruction Project, said, "It has been a huge task, we tried to make a domus, actually two domuses - two great villas of the Imperial age - come back to life by means of the virtual reality reconstruction special effects." The buildings, likely built between the 1st and the 5th Centuries AD, appear to have been abandoned after a fire. The walls stand nearly two-and-a-half meters high. The building remains were discovered approximately 7 meters below the street level of modern Rome.
