Restoration at an ancient temple proves a double boon, with the recovery of a priceless object. The thousand-year-old Luohan or Arhat Temple is a monumental landmark of Chongqing Municipality in southwest China. The venerable structure is under major reconstruction. The work results from a campaign last year. Temple authorities set out to raise funds in the hope of restoring the temple to its former luster. During renovations, in one of the Buddhist scriptures rooms, staff found an ancient painting. They believe it to be priceless. The painting vividly depicts various postures of two hundred and fifty Arhats. Experts say a seal at the end of the painting scroll, certifies its identity. The painting was done between the Jiajing and Daoguang periods of the Qing Dynasty. That would place it between three hundred and four hundred years ago. Tang Zhaoxin, director of China Association of Collectors, said, "Normally we establish the age of a painting like this from the texture of the paper and the color of ink. You can see, these marks here, that look like frost marks. These can not possibly appear in less than a hundred years." The painting is almost 17 meters long. Its width is a little over half a metre. Experts believe the painting should depict five hundred Arhats. That means there is another half, still to be found. Tang Zhaoxin said, "We hope more effort can be made and that before long we will find the other half." Experts describe the painting as an invaluable treasure. The exact value is hard to ascertain, until the other half of the painting is discovered.
