Merchant Boat Goes Ashore After 800 Years

Salvage resumed Wednesday on an amazing piece of Chinese history, a large ancient cargo ship, fully loaded, that sank in the South China Sea 800 years ago. Hard weather had delayed salvage operations on the 5-thousand ton, Nanhai One. The ship was hoisted at last aboard huge airbags. Workers assisted by a crane spent three gruelling hours pulling the 30-meter-long wooden vessel to a temporary port. It is to be housed in a new "crystal palac." Nanhai One is expected to complete the journey to its new station Thursday night. Friday, it will enter a specially built glass pool, where the water temperature, pressure and other environmental conditions are the same as conditions where the ship lay for centuries, on the sea bed.
