On the occasion of the Cultural Year of Greece in China, the “Labyrinths” exhibition aspires to bring together two ancient civilizations through the channel of contemporary art expression on 12 January – 15 February 2008 at 798 Art Space, Beijing.The labyrinths of the ancient Greeks were complex structures with convoluted passages and crossing galleries, from where it was almost impossible to find a way out. Yet Theseus and Ariadne of the myth managed to find it, using a simple thread.With this thread as a guide to find their way through the labyrinths of today –the modern way of life, the crowded metropolises and the fast pace of urban and financial growth in cities such as Beijing and Athens– Babel with 31 Greek artists have come here to share and exchange images and ideas, to celebrate together the creative communication of cultures.Contemporary young Greek artists are inspired by the city landscapes and transform them in their own distinctive ways. Eastern, Greek and Byzantine influences meet with modern and Western images and ways of expression, seeking to narrate stories of everyday life.Their creation process is strongly related to the dimension of Time –especially to the quality of the ephemeral– as their fundamental aim is the artistic exchange and not the creation of an art object that will last forever. The conjunction of various kinds of art –painting, sculpture, theatre direction, literature, architecture– in order to create new forms of art, as well as the use of new technologies and the combination of classical painting with digital images, are also important features of the modern artistic expression.The Labyrinths exhibition includes comics, illustrations and graphic design, street art, sculptural installations and video installations, portraying significant aspects of Greek contemporary art.
