Hirst's Skull Goes on Show at Hermitage in March, Museum Says

Damien Hirst's $100 million skull will go on show on March 28 in Russia, the State Hermitage Museum said. The diamond and platinum skull, entitled "For the Love of God," will be on display until May 18, the museum's Web site said today. The sculpture, studded with 8,601 diamonds and weighing 1,106.18 carats, was first shown in London last June. Hirst said in an interview in Kiev on Oct. 8 last year that he plans to take the skull on a tour of "the best museums around the world." Eight straight years of economic growth and record oil prices have created an ever-expanding pool of wealthy Russian art collectors that U.S. and European dealers are keen to tap. Dmitri Ozerkov, the official in charge of the St. Petersburg exhibition, declined to elaborate on the Web site announcement today. Hirst, the U.K.'s wealthiest artist, is part of an investment group that bought "For the Love of God" in August and plans to resell it, White Cube gallery said at the time. The buying group is required to send the diamond skull on tour, it said. The plan to resell the skull came as hedge fund managers and other art collectors lost money in the credit markets.
