Woodblock Printing Gets Rejuvenation in Shandong

One man, in east China's Shandong Province, is on a personal crusade, to try to restore the dying art of woodblock printing. The art is part of the local cultural heritage. Wang Shengliang, who lives in Qinghe county in Bingzhou city, is creating a series of new prints based on Sun Zi, the famous military strategist of ancient China.The craft of woodblock printing, hundreds of years old, once was a cottage industry in Qinghe county. Wang Shengliang is of the 21st generation of inheritors of the craft. In recent years he has become fascinated by the stories of Sun Zi, who lived some 2500 years ago."Master Sun's Art of War" is Wang's latest series. The book is one of China's most important works dealing with military strategy and tactics. The print series includes 13 pieces. 78 woodblocks will be required to complete the series. Wang has finished drawing the pictures on the woodblocks. The next step is engraving. He expects to complete the series by the middle of this year.
