Stage Brings Life into Famous Ancient Painting

There is an old and famous scroll painting in China, entitled, "Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival". It depicts the hustle and bustle of Kaifeng, the capital of the Northern Song dynasty, eight hundred years ago. Press fast forward now and move eight centuries, into the present. A dance show breathes life into the famous scroll. The show premiered at Zhengzhou, capital city of Henan Province. As the boatsmen in the Bian River sing their working songs, a vivid picture of life in the Song Dynasty spreads upon the modern stage. The song and dance play follows painter Zhang Zeduan, the creator of the famous painting. The story reveals the artist's versatility and unconstrained personality. Zhang was so passionate about his life and so caring about people that he was inspired to paint "Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival" It is a work renowned for its skillfully executed detail. The play is a co-production of the Zhengzhou and Kaifeng dance troupes. Everything about the play, from setting to music, from costume to characters, has been designed to assure authenticity. Audiences can almost feel the pulse of life during the ancient dynasty, hundreds of years ago.
