An ancient cemetery was discovered in Southwest China's Chongqing municipality not long ago. Archaeologists say it's huge, a treasure trove, where details of local life centuries ago are about to be revealed. The cemetery stretches more than two kilometers along the foot of a mountain. Archaeologists have already located more than a hundred tombs, made of bricks. That establishes the date of their construction from the Eastern Han through the Western Jin Dynasties. Most of the tombs are in fairly good condition. Bas-relief sculpture adorns the chamber walls. So far, more than a thousand articles have been recovered from the cemetery. Workers found pottery, jade ornaments, and metal receptacles. Li Dadi, archeologist, said, "Brick tombs were commonly found in Sichuan back in the Eastern Han Dynasty. Most of the time, the articles were arranged according to a specific order in the tomb chamber. There would be sculptures of domesticated animals and servants and daily utensils." Based on preliminary research, archeologists say this was an exclusive resting place for the society's elite. The wealth contained in the tombs is soon to open a new window on the past.
